How to Create a Meaningful Pride Month Social Media Post

Social Media Marketing

June is Pride Month: a time for LGBTQ+ community members from all parts of the world to embrace their true selves, reflect on their struggles, and celebrate their accomplishments.

We’ll be seeing countless businesses showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community on social media once again. This means switching to rainbow-colored logos and cover photos, tweeting #pride hashtags, and creating campaigns featuring queer people.

The question is, how can businesses show support for the queer community in a genuine way?

Before you and your social media team can start brainstorming ideas for Pride Month, make sure that you finish reading this post first. You’ll be learning how to create and implement a campaign that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community respectfully.

1. Have a Clear Purpose

Pride Month isn’t about your business goals. If you’re adding a rainbow to your logo just so you can win the hearts of LGBTQ+ members without any intention of reaching out to them, you’re only setting yourself up for failure.

Before posting any Pride-related content, you need to have a goal. You need to be 100% sure that you’re taking part in this month-long campaign because you sincerely want to be there for the community. Take time to reflect on these questions:

  • Do I want my company to be a safe space and ally? Or do I want it to seem like a safe space and ally?
  • Am I participating for the right reasons?
  • In what ways can the company provide actual support for the LGBTQ+ community, as opposed to just empty words?

2. Learn About the Origins and History of Pride Month

To participate in Pride Month, it’s important to fully understand its history. This allows you to participate without making gaffes. It also makes it possible for you to engage in the celebration in a more genuine way.

You can start by learning about the major events that transpired during the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Manhattan, turned into a historic place when patrons and other community members stood up against the police who were harassing them.

The Stonewall Riots took place at the end of June, and every year the queer community commemorates the people—many of whom were trans women of color—who fought for their rights.

While the LGBTQ+ community has made progress, it’s important to acknowledge that various forms of queerphobia still run rampant today. Much of this oppression is especially targeted at trans people and queer POC.

3. Educate Your Audience

Education and awareness is an important part of any campaign that actually advocates for the LGBTQ+ community.

Here are several ideas you can use for your content:

  • Explain the symbolism behind the Pride flag
  • Share a video of your employees explaining what pride means to them
  • Feature a notable LGBTQ+ figure and highlight their background and contributions
  • Fascinate your audience with surprising LGBTQ+ facts
  • Post inspiring Pride quotes

Infographics are a great tool that you can use to make it easier for your followers to gain a better understanding of Pride Month and the rest of queer history.

4. Be Transparent

In any messaging you communicate to honor Pride Month, see to it that you keep it clear, specific, and transparent. Let everyone know why you’re getting involved, how you’re doing it, and if you have any future plans to expand those efforts.

By outlining detailed steps, you’re making it clear to your audience that you’re not simply hopping on the bandwagon to reach a wider audience, but you’re determined to be a true ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

5. Don’t Create External Campaigns Just for Monetary Gain

While it’s always nice to offer an outpouring of support to the LGBTQ+ community, you should be doing it for them, not for your business. Odds are, your audience will see through your attempts to take advantage of the initiative.

To ensure that your campaign is coming from the right place, it can be useful to reach out to any queer people at your company. You can ask them what they would want to see from the company during Pride Month. Doing so helps minimize the possibility of making mistakes that could alienate LGBTQ+ people.

6. Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Don’t be one of those brands that treat Pride Month like a marketing campaign. Instead, spend your time, energy, and money doing an activity that will positively impact the LGBTQ+ community.

For instance, something as simple as spending time with advocacy groups or volunteering at community events can make a difference. You might also want to host a fundraiser for local charities that serve the LGBTQ+ community or donate to one that’s already ongoing.

Don’t forget to encourage your followers to do the same.

Need a Professional Team to Assist You in Your Pride Campaign?

Showing your support for Pride Month on social media requires more than merely adding rainbow-themed images and using hashtags like #lgbtqpride and #loveislove. If you’re really keen on being an LGBTQ+ ally, taking the steps mentioned above will help you get there.

Then again, you should make it a point to be there for them all year round, not just every June.
