LLM Optimization After ChatGPT Ads: Why Brands Get Named but Not Linked

Content Marketing

ChatGPT is talking about brands more than ever. It just isn’t linking to them as often. Since OpenAI began showing ads inside ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, the sources the model cites have shifted in ways that directly affect every LLM optimization strategy.

That might sound like bad news, but the shift rewards things businesses can actually control: their own websites, their customer reviews, and the depth of their content. Brands that understand where citations have moved can position themselves to earn them. Our artificial intelligence optimization services team has been tracking each development, and the path forward is clearer than the headlines suggest.

What Changed in ChatGPT Citations After the Ad Rollout

The ad launch coincided with a major model update, and the combination reshaped how ChatGPT handles brand questions. These are prompts like “Is this software worth it?” or “Which provider should I choose?” Because they sit closest to a buying decision, changes here carry the most weight for businesses.

Citation Counts Dipped, Then Recovered With a New Mix

AirOps monitored roughly 3,000 brands across more than 170 million AI answers between December 2025 and March 2026. In an analysis published on Built In, the team reported that the average number of citations per answer for brand queries fell from 4.95 to 2.96 within five weeks, a 41% decline. By late March, counts had climbed back to about 4.5.

The totals recovered, but the types of sources earning those citations never returned to their old balance:

  • Company and product websites grew from 55% of brand-query citations to roughly 62%, and they’ve held that share.
  • Review platforms such as G2 and Capterra rose from 5% to about 7%.
  • Educational content, including “what is” and “how it works” articles, slipped from 14% to under 10%.

Put simply, ChatGPT increasingly goes straight to the source when someone asks about a product or company. Then it checks what customers say about it.

Why the Timing Matters

The steepest drop landed about three weeks after ads launched, right as OpenAI released GPT-5.3 Instant. OpenAI described that model as built to synthesize information rather than list source URLs. OpenAI has also stated that ads don’t influence the answers ChatGPT gives.

Whatever the exact cause, the lesson for marketers is the same. AI platforms change how they choose sources with little warning, so a strategy built on a single tactic is fragile. A strategy built on genuine authority adapts much more easily.

ChatGPT Names More Brands but Links to Fewer

Brand mentions per answer actually increased over the same window, even as citation links declined. The model still reads third-party articles and explainers. It simply cites them less often when someone asks about a specific brand.

The same research found that only 15% of the pages ChatGPT retrieves make it into a final answer. The model reads broadly and cites narrowly, filtering sources based on how well titles align with the question and how specific and clear the content is.

For businesses, two things now happen at once. Being named in an answer builds awareness, even without a click. Being the linked source, however, requires content strong enough to survive that 85% cut. Visibility in AI search now has two measures: whether a brand gets mentioned and whether its website gets cited.

Ads Don’t Buy a Seat Inside the Answer

Some marketers assumed ChatGPT ads would become a shortcut to AI answers. The data says otherwise. An SE Ranking study of ChatGPT ads, covering more than 50,000 commercial prompts, found ads in about 26% of answers. Yet the advertiser’s own domain appeared among the cited sources in only 3.63% of those placements.

That separation should encourage businesses of every size. Organic authority, not ad spend, still decides who gets cited. Paid placements can still play a role in a broader marketing mix. Still, they work alongside earned visibility rather than replacing it. A well-structured website with a strong reputation can compete for visibility despite a much smaller budget.

That’s especially true for local and service-based businesses. A dental practice, law firm, or home services company may never outspend a national brand. Still, it can become the clearest, most trusted source for the questions its customers ask.

Two Reasoning Modes, Two Different Source Lists

There’s another layer worth understanding. ChatGPT’s quick default answers and its deeper “Thinking” responses often pull from very different corners of the web. A Semrush reasoning-mode study conducted with growth advisor Kevin Indig ran 100 prompts through both modes and found that only 25.6% of cited domains overlapped.

High reasoning cited sources more often, 68% of the time, compared to 50%, and nearly doubled the number of sources per response. Of the 173 unique domains it cited, 99 never appeared in minimal reasoning.

Thinking mode also ran roughly 4.6 times as many web searches across the test set, while Reddit’s share of citations fell from 15% to 7%. Deeper research relies more heavily on sources with real substance.

In practical terms, a brand that shows up in quick answers may disappear when a buyer asks for a detailed comparison, and vice versa. Checking a single mode only reveals part of the picture. Effective LLM optimization accounts for both. The good news is that the same fundamentals strengthen visibility in each mode, starting with a business’s own website.

Treat Your Website as the Primary Source

Product and service pages now carry more citation weight than general educational content on brand queries. Recent Ahrefs query fan-out research points the same way: when ChatGPT runs a site-specific search, 76% of those searches target a brand’s own website.

The same research shows ChatGPT moving away from sites that summarize information and toward the sources that produce it. Brand sites, hands-on product testers, and research bodies gained citations, while aggregators and explainer sites lost ground.

That makes service pages, pricing details, and comparison content prime citation assets. The strongest pages share a few traits:

  • Precise titles that match how people phrase their questions
  • Direct answers placed near the top of each section
  • Clear headings, short paragraphs, and scannable lists
  • Schema markup that helps AI systems interpret business details

Pages buried behind vague headlines or generic copy give AI systems little to work with, no matter how polished the design looks.

Professional website copywriting built around these traits helps a page serve both human visitors and AI models. It also supports traditional search engine optimization, which still matters a great deal. AirOps found that ChatGPT cited pages ranking first on Google at a rate 3.5 times that of pages outside the top 20.

Strengthen the Reviews AI Is Reading

Review platforms are one of the few third-party source types gaining ground in ChatGPT answers. Star ratings alone don’t tell the whole story, either. AI tools read review text closely before recommending a business, paying attention to details about service, results, and the overall experience.

A steady review generation process builds a fresh, detailed review footprint on the platforms that matter most in a given industry. Pair that with consistent business information across directories and social profiles, and AI systems see a credible, trustworthy brand from every angle. Thoughtful responses to reviews also show prospective customers that real people stand behind the business.

Write Content That Earns Citations in Both Modes

Educational content isn’t dead, but its role has changed. Explainers still shape how AI models understand a topic, and deeper reasoning modes tend to delve more deeply into supporting material during research.

The goal now is depth and originality. Firsthand expertise, specific examples, and proprietary data give AI systems something a summary site can’t offer. Content formats that tend to hold up well include:

  • Case studies with real numbers and outcomes
  • FAQ sections that answer specific buyer questions in plain language
  • Comparison pages that explain how options differ
  • Original research, surveys, or internal benchmarks

Our breakdown of content that earns AI citations covers how service pages and supporting articles work together to build that kind of authority.

Track Brand Mentions Alongside Clicks

When ChatGPT names a brand without linking to it, traditional traffic reports miss that win entirely. Monitor how often the brand appears in AI answers for its most important questions. Test those prompts in both quick and Thinking modes, then compare the results over time. A simple tracking routine might include:

  • How often the brand is named for priority questions
  • Which pages, if any, ChatGPT links to
  • Which competitors appear in the same answers
  • How results differ between reasoning modes

Patterns in this data reveal gaps quickly. If a competitor keeps getting cited for a high-value question, that’s a signal to build a stronger, more specific page on that topic.

Mentions are a real form of visibility, even when they never register as a session in analytics. Tracking them alongside citations gives a far more accurate view of AI search performance.
